Year 2 Planets

Welcome to Planets class and Year 2!

My name is Miss King and I teach the class with the help of our Teaching Assistant Mrs Matthews. I am also the Phase Leader for Years 1 and 2, on those days Mrs Sivell and Mrs Farmer take the class. Year 2 is an important year in their academic life and we naturally expect more from them than in Year 1, but rest assured we care about the whole development and wellbeing of your child. Do speak to me about any new concerns.

Reading, writing and the spoken language are my special interests, and by sharing my knowledge of great children’s books hopefully allows them to leave Year 2 with a real thirst for reading for pleasure!

In Planets class we are very enthusiastic, dramatic, and inquisitive; always eager to learn more! We have some wonderful books from our Text Linked Curriculum which allow us to go on a journey to lots of different places. Throughout the year we are encouraged to work together and support each other’s learning journey using Building Learning Power.

Homework is an important element of the partnership between teachers and parents in Year Two as it supports the weekly learning. We expect children to read daily at home and learn their spellings each week. We conduct weekly checks of spelling on Fridays, in the form of dictation. Research shows that using and applying newly learnt words in sentences is more effective than rote learning a list of words for recall in a test. Every Friday we will send home new spellings along with their test results for you to see the accuracy with which your child is spelling, along with a new list of words to learn at home. They also have weekly maths, English or topic homework to support their current learning in class.

This year is also the year the children take end of Key Stage One government tests. The children are prepared in a fun, stimulating and unpressured way, so by the time they actually sit them they are relaxed, confident and excited to show off all the knowledge they have accomplished in Year 2!

Year 2 is a very busy and exciting as we support your child in becoming more independent and have the satisfaction of watching them grow into confident, articulate and enthusiastic learners!
