Year 1 Meteors

Welcome to Meteors Class!

My name is Mr Chalkley, I am the class teacher for Meteors Class, and I work alongside our terrific teaching assistants Mrs Hall, Mrs Matthews, Mrs Steel and Mrs Adams. Together, with Nebulas, we make up the year 1 team and start the children on their Key Stage One journey. When I am not teaching Meteors Class I enjoy playing cricket and football, both of these sports have provided me with endless skills and team building opportunities that is reflected in my teaching.

In Meteors class, we aspire to have a classroom environment where the children value themselves and their peers. In our classroom you will find enthusiastic, hardworking, resilient children who’s individual needs are met, in turn allowing them to flourish and reach their full potential.

Our learning, in Meteors class, pivots around our core TLC books, which allow us to dive into our curriculum and explore the learning objectives outlined in the National Curriculum. Our learning is made memorable through our TLC books, with the characters and stories connecting personally with the children; whether it is through the paws of the bears in Peace at Last (Jill Murphy), or the wings of the penguin in Lost and Found (Oliver Jeffers). These TLC books facilitate cross-curricula links and enable us to explore topics such as, seasons, belonging and materials.

Additionally, taking prominence throughout the year is English and Maths. We build upon the skills learnt in Reception and the children’s phonics knowledge, which is all in preparation for the statutory phonics screening check, which take place towards the end of the year. PE will also take place twice a week and where possible be brought into other subjects, as I believe the benefits of physical exercise can support children’s learning, as well as their independence and understanding.

This year more than ever, will see Meteors Class working hard providing the children with the expertise and skills needed to promote lifelong learning, which will stay with the children and support them, not only through their time at Hillcrest, but beyond.

Our potential, as Meteors Class, is endless.
