Relationships, Sex and Health Education

At Hillcrest Primary School, we believe that Relationships, Sex and Health Education is an important part of a broad and balanced curriculum. It supports children’s personal development, health and wellbeing and helps them develop the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy and independent lives.

Our RSHE curriculum is taught as part of our wider PSHE programme using the Kapow Primary RSE/PSHE scheme of work. Learning is carefully sequenced so that children build their knowledge and understanding gradually as they move through the school.

Related learning also takes place through other subjects, including Science and Religious Education, as well as through assemblies, whole-school projects and events.

At Hillcrest, we believe that Relationships, Sex and Health Education helps children develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to stay safe, build positive relationships and look after their wellbeing.

What will my child learn?

This shows the topics taught in each year group and when they are taught. Any non-statutory sex education is clearly identified.

👨‍👩‍👧 Can I withdraw my child?

Parents do not have the right to withdraw their child from:

Relationships Education;
Health Education; or
content taught as part of the statutory National Curriculum for Science.

Parents do have the legal right to request that their child is withdrawn from some or all additional non-statutory sex education.

At Hillcrest, the parental right of withdrawal currently applies to the Year 6 sex education unit.

Parents who wish to request withdrawal should contact the school or Headteacher.

We will invite parents to discuss their concerns and view the relevant teaching materials. If parents choose to proceed with withdrawal, the request will be recorded and alternative provision will be made for the child during those sessions.
