Will You Race for Life on Thursday 8th July 2021?

Race for Life Sponsored Run – Thursday 8th July 2021

It is exciting to be able to plan for a whole-school charitable fundraiser after so much time keeping such events off the calendar because of Covid.

Hillcrest will be hosting its very own Race for Life event on Thursday 8th July. A ¾ mile loop around the school grounds has been created which begins on the school field and takes in the woodland area, crosses the car park, skirts around the edge of the Reception and KS1 playgrounds, passes through the sensory garden and amphitheatre, before crossing the KS2 playground and finishing back on the school field.

Each participant will be given a 20-minute time slot in which to run (or walk) as far as they can around the circuit with the most able athletes undoubtedly completing more than one (or several) of the ¾ mile loops before the 20 minutes is up.

The children will take part in year groups throughout the morning with each child who is able to raise at least £3 receiving a unique silver medal for taking part.

We obviously need to set a minimum figure of £3 for fundraising otherwise the charitable event would lose money on the purchase of the medals alone. However, we have seen in the past how good the Hillcrest pupils and Hillcrest community is at fundraising and we would encourage families to raise as much money as possible for this great cause.

As with other recent fundraising events, the children in each year group who raise the largest sum of money will be awarded a prize.

A sponsorship form has been added to this letter and we would ask that any monies raised are dropped into the front office of the school, within an envelope that has been clearly named, has the child’s class also written onto the front and the amount that should be inside the envelope. The sponsorship form should also be inside the envelope. Any cheques should be made payable to ‘Hillcrest Primary School.’ All funds raised should be with the school by Friday 16th July.

As the Friends of Hillcrest’s activities have been heavily curtailed by the pandemic and their opportunities to raise funds limited as a result, we are intending on splitting the funds raised. 60% of the profits from the event will go to Cancer Research UK who organise the Race for Life events and 40% will go to Friends of Hillcrest. The school would normally support a fundraiser for the Friends of Hillcrest during the Summer Term and this event provides us with that opportunity.

Adult Participation – would you or any other family members want to run?

In order to raise as much money as we can for Cancer Research UK and Friends of Hillcrest, we are opening up the opportunity for family members to run our unique circuit around the school grounds.

We are aware of how important running and walking has become to people throughout the lockdowns as a form of escapism and exercise. However, there have been very few opportunities to race with a group, especially since the postponement of Parkruns during the first lockdown.

To mark the opportunity to run with a group again, each participant will receive a unique silver medal consisting of the Hillcrest logo and the text, ‘Race for Life July 2021,’ along with a message on the burgundy ribbon stating ‘First Post-Covid Community Event.’

Adult participants will also receive a shirt number on the day of the event so that we can record (if you wish us to) the distance that you cover in the 20 minutes.

We are asking that adults wishing to take part pay a £5 entrance fee. This means that adults do not have to concern themselves with raising money through sponsorship but instead can buy themselves a space at the event.

There are a maximum of 50 spaces available on each time slot identified towards the end of this letter for adult participants. Feel free to promote this to other family members, friends and colleagues who may be interested in taking part. The more the merrier and for those who love collecting race medals, a great opportunity to get such a unique item.

The event is against the clock rather than a direct race against other people with each participant seeking to get as far round the ¾ mile lap as they can during the 20 minutes. There are parts of the course where overtaking will not be possible but other sections of the course where you will be able to pass other runners. An experienced Parkrunner who completes a 5km run in a good time might hope to complete 4 or more laps of our course in 20 minutes.

The pupils will automatically take part and no bookings are necessary. However, all bookings for adult places on the Hillcrest Race for Life will need to be booked via Wisepay. Multiple booking can be made and therefore, parents can book on behalf of other family members, friends or colleagues who would not have access to Wisepay.

The adult Race for Life events will take place at 1.45pm, 2.15pm, 3.45pm, 4.15pm, 4.45pm and 5.15pm.

Please log on to Wisepay to guarantee your place. Race numbers will then be issued on the day.

So that we can keep a close eye on numbers, we would like all bookings for places to have been made by the end of the day on Tuesday 6th July.

We would also like to ask that once you have booked your spaces on WisePay, you complete the form below and return it to the school before Tuesday 6th July so that we can ensure we have the names of the people that we are expecting onto site.

We look forward to seeing as many of you participating as possible and to raising as much money for Cancer Research UK and Friends of Hillcrest as possible.
