Outdoor Learning Week 2020

Next week (week beginning 21st September) the children will be engaging in as much learning in the outdoors as we can possibly squeeze in.

Children are spending less time outdoors than ever before and this is affecting their health, wellbeing and love of the natural world. Time outdoors – during Outdoor Learning Week and every day – will make children happier and healthier, as well as helping them form habits that will stick with them for life. They will have a love of the natural world and will take action to protect it.

Outdoor Learning Week was originally scheduled to take place last June but with the vast majority of pupils not in school, it never happened.

However, upon our return it fits in really well with the current situation as the outdoors and the abundance of fresh air makes the spread of coronavirus more difficult, along with the fact that being in the outdoors is good for everyone’s mental wellbeing.

We are fortunate to have a wealth of outdoor space for the teachers to use with the children including a huge sports field, amphitheatre, sensory garden, woodland area and Forest School. All of these space will be timetabled for use by the staff across all year groups throughout the course of next week. The various outdoor lessons will cover a wide range of curriculum subjects.

Because of the clothes changing situation that also affects PE lessons, in the event that there is any rain next week (with some unfortunately forecast for later in the week) then the outdoor lessons are likely to be cancelled. However, it may be that if it is only light drizzle the lesson will continue. Therefore, please ensure that your children attend school in a coat every day and, in the event that the temperatures drop as they are predicted to do, that their coat or jacket is thick enough to keep them warm whilst outside.
